With a traditionally print background, discovering the glory of motion graphics opened up a new world for me. Now when I design a logo, I often think about how it animates. Same with a page layout. Cinemagraphs are now a thing. I wonder if we can credit its popularization to Instagram where instead of posting an image, someone captures up to a 60 second motion of time without moving the camera phone. Instead of seeing a photo of a butterfly, we see a subtle snippet of that butterfly twitching its wings as the flowers sway and clouds pass by.
The beauty of most design work and learning new software is that one truly learns when they have a project and a deadline. The hand tool sequence was the first experimental project done as a group when I prompted my design assistants to learn along with me and make their own video to share. The tool images worked perfectly as assets since I photographed them previously for SAIC’s tool catalogue and had the files ready.
With quite a few ideas brewing that need to be executed, here is version 1.0 as a reference to see how things progress.
